Sjogren's syndrome

چکیده
In Sjogren's syndrome, which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the lacrimal and salivary glands (Sjogren, 1933), there is commonly dryness of the lips and the oral mucosa with the secretion of thick, ropy saliva. The symptoms may be sufficiently severe to interfere with mastication and produce angular cheilitis and atrophy of the oral mucosa. An increase in the incidence of dental caries following the development of xerostomia due to Sjogren's syndrome has been reported by Bloch, Buchanan, Wahl, and Bunim (1965). It is generally accepted that the composition of the commensal oral flora is controlled by complex interactions among the oral microorganisms themselves (Bjornesjo, 1950), the host tissues, and the mechanical washing action and antimicrobial activity of saliva (Bibby, Hine, and Clough, 1938; Van Kesteren, Bibby, and Berry, 1942; Kerr and Wedderburn, 1958; MacFarlane and Mason, 1972). If one of these factors is greatly altered, for example, virtual cessation of salivary secretion, changes might be expected to occur in the oral flora. This study was carried out to discover whether a difference existed in the oral flora of patients with xerostomia due to Sj6gren's syndrome compared with normal healthy controls.

Impact of Sjogren's syndrome on Parkinson’s disease: A nationwide case-control study
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether Sjogren's syndrome would have an influence on the development of Parkinson's disease. METHODS A population-based case-control study was conducted. Participants consisted of 7716 subjects with newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease and a population of 75129 matched control subjects between 2000 and 2010. We measured the risk of Parkinson's disease in association w...
متن کاملSecondary Sjogren's syndrome and scleroderma presenting as renal tubular acidosis.
We report a case of distal renal tubular acidosis in a twenty year old female patient of scleroderma and secondary Sjogren's syndrome. This patient presented with two episodes of flaccid quadriparesis which were associated with hypokalaemia and was later found to have an underlying scleroderma with secondary Sjogren's syndrome.
متن کاملPrimary Sjogren's syndrome complicated by bilateral pleural effusion.
Sjogren's syndrome can cause many organic changes, but is rarely accompanied by pleuritis. We report a 65-year-old patient with primary Sjogren's syndrome who developed bilateral pleuritis with moderately large effusions. He was diagnosed as having Sjogren's syndrome, based on xerophthalmia, xerostomia, positive results for anti-Sjogren's syndrome (anti-SS-A/SS-B) antibodies, the Schirmer test ...
متن کاملThirteen-year follow-up of a mandibular implant-supported fixed complete denture in a patient with Sjogren's syndrome: a clinical report.
This clinical report describes the treatment and long-term follow-up of a patient with Sjogren's syndrome treated with osseointegrated implants and a mandibular fixed complete denture. The implants and prosthesis have remained stable and functional for 13 years. Implant treatment may, therefore, offer a viable long-term treatment alternative for patients with Sjogren's syndrome.
متن کاملPrimary Sjogren's syndrome and autoimmune cytopenias: a relation often overlooked.
Primary Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease wherein there is lymphocytic infiltration of salivary and lacrimal glands. This inflammation is thought to be caused by B-lymphocytes. The most common clinical feature of Sjogren's is dryness of the mouth and eyes, but rare complications can occur such as autoimmune cytopenias. Here we report two cases of immune mediated cytopenias that were d...
متن کاملSjogren's syndrome and glomerular nephritis
The combination of systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's disease and severe diffuse glomerular nephritis has only rarely been reported. A 14-year-old girl is described with lupus nephritis in whom co-existent clinical and histological features of Sjogren's syndrome were found. These include bilateral parotid enlargement, xerostomia, increased serum amylase, reduced salivary secretion and lymp...
